The top 10 newsmakers of 2008

At this rate, Spain will win it at a walk. Readers, if you disagree with your peers, please send your ranking of the top 10 newsmakers of 2008 to jerradpeters@gmail.com. The final, comprehensive list will appear in my Penalty Kicks column in the Winnipeg Free Press on Saturday, December 27. And who knows—if you accompany your picks with some interesting comments, you could earn yourself some print-space as well.

Of course, not all of you have voted for Spain. Cristiano Ronaldo is getting some joy, as is Canada's dismal performance in World Cup qualifiers. (I didn't think the national team worthied mention, but some of you felt otherwise. So be it.) I've also received several honorable mentions to Montreal Impact and the African Cup of Nations.

Polls will close on Friday, December 19. Make your selections from the choices below, or submit a write-in candidate. As always, Ronaldo's night out with a pair of Brazilian transvestites is off limits.

a) Spain wins EURO 2008

b) Egypt wins African Cup of Nations

c) Manchester United win Premier League and Champions' League double

d) LDU Quito win Copa America

e) Montreal Impact contend in CONCACAF Champions' League

f) Manchester City: become world's richest club and buy Robinho

g) David Beckham joins AC Milan

h) Newcastle: hire Kevin Keegan, fire Kevin Keegan, and various other shenanigans

i) Ronaldinho joins AC Milan

j) Cristiano Ronaldo scores 42 goals and almost joins Real Madrid

k) Maradona appointed Argentina coach.
